George Thomson's stunning late strike secured a 4-1 victory for Harrogate Town against Eastleigh at Wetherby Road, a win that moves the club up to fourth in the National League. The 34-year-old midfielder, making his comeback from a long-term Achilles injury, bent a 25-yard effort into the top corner in the 89th minute to complete the scoring after goals from Brad Dologhan (two) and Bailey Hobson.
Simon Weaver, the manager, praised his side's response after recent setbacks. "I think it was the perfect response and the timing was great to win in such convincing style," he said. The victory follows back-to-back defeats to AFC Fylde and Boreham Wood and lifts Harrogate Town to 16 points from nine games, placing them fifth in the live standings.
How the game unfolded
Harrogate Town started brightly and took the lead after six minutes. Will McGowan found Lewis Cass on the right, whose low cross was turned in from close range by Brad Dologhan. The home side dominated the next quarter of an hour, with McGowan hitting the crossbar and Hobson heading over. Eastleigh equalised against the run of play after 25 minutes, Jordan Cousins finishing from a corner after a defensive lapse.
The Sulphurites restored their lead six minutes before halftime. Grant Horton headed a free-kick back into the area and Dologhan nipped in to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and roll it into an empty net. The hosts thought they had a third early in the second half when Josh Hmami tapped in, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Hobson finally extended the lead on 79 minutes, firing home a 25-yard free-kick, before Thomson's memorable finish sealed the points.
Thomson's special moment
The goal was Thomson's first in competitive football for over 16 months, his last coming in a 5-3 loss to MK Dons in the 2023/24 season. The former Nottingham Forest trainee, who has now scored more than 50 goals for the club across nine years, missed a large portion of last season after suffering an Achilles injury in the opening game. He underwent multiple surgeries and made his playing return on New Year's Day. This was his 25th attempt at goal since coming back and his ninth appearance of the current campaign, with most coming from the substitutes' bench.
The three points provide a significant boost ahead of a busy period. Harrogate Town's next fixture is away to 19th-placed Hartlepool on Tuesday, 29 September. Fans can view the full upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures page. The win against Eastleigh, part of a recent run of three victories from their last five matches, demonstrates the squad's resilience as they aim to consolidate their position in the promotion chase.
