Harrogate Town suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat away to a nine-man Carlisle United side on Wednesday night, a result that manager Simon Weaver labelled an embarrassment. The loss at Brunton Park abruptly ended Town's five-match winning streak in the National League.

Carlisle took a shock lead in the 10th minute through Josh Williams. The home side's task seemed impossible when Miguel Azeez was sent off four minutes later and Harvey Bunker followed with a red card on the half-hour mark. Despite the two-man advantage, Harrogate produced a disjointed display. Callum Whelan doubled Carlisle's lead within a minute of the restart, and substitute Ryan Galvin sealed the remarkable win with a 61st-minute solo goal after running half the length of the pitch.

The Harrogate boss did not hold back in his assessment. "I am embarrassed," Weaver said. "We were given an opportunity because of the two sending-offs early in the game to put in a really convincing display and continue the form of the last six matches, where we have been brilliant. We were below par on every level."

He conceded his tactical changes failed to make an impact and criticised his team's lack of composure. "We showed no composure at all," Weaver added. "I don't think we showed enough arrogance on the ball, actually, and I'm surprised by the lack of confidence in the second half to really take the game to them."

Weaver also expressed his frustration at his team's inability to capitalise on their numerical advantage, describing the performance as a missed chance to apply pressure on the league leaders. He stated that the players were made aware of the opportunity the red cards presented but failed to execute. The manager confirmed there would be an in-depth review of the performance.

Carlisle manager Paul Simpson praised his team's resilience and defensive organisation, calling the victory one of his proudest moments. He highlighted the work rate of his remaining nine players and the strategic decision to drop into a deep defensive block, which Harrogate struggled to break down.

Despite the defeat, Harrogate Town remain second in the National League standings. However, the gap to leaders Boreham Wood has now stretched to 10 points. The squad will need to regroup quickly, with their next fixture a home match against Altrincham this Saturday.
