Harrogate Town sign Baptiste and Payne in summer transfer push

Harrogate Town have completed the signings of Middlesbrough defender Archie Baptiste and former Morecambe right-back Lewis Payne as part of a busy summer transfer window under manager Simon Weaver. Next fixture: vs Boreham Wood (at home, 2027-02-20).

Who are the new arrivals?

Archie Baptiste, 20, joins from Championship side Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal. The young defender, who progressed through Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, made one senior appearance for Boro and spent last season on loan at Rochdale without featuring. Head of player recruitment Lloyd Kerry highlighted Baptiste’s eagerness to gain first-team experience in men’s football.

Lewis Payne, 22, arrives from Morecambe after scoring four goals in 33 National League appearances last season. The right-back, who began his career at Southampton, was a long-term target for Weaver. Weaver described Payne as a specialist who will add quality to the squad.

What about departures and contract extensions?

Harrogate Town have also seen defender Liam Gibson depart for Hartlepool United on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract after three seasons. Meanwhile, midfielders George Thomson and Lucas Barnes have signed new one-year deals. Thomson, 34, will enter his 10th season with the club, having made 335 appearances and played a key role in their rise from National League North to League Two. Barnes, 19, made his first-team debut in the 2024-25 season.

Experienced goalkeeper Rory Watson, 30, has also joined on a one-year deal after leaving National League champions York City. Watson, who has previously played for Hull City, Scunthorpe United, and Wrexham, expressed his excitement about joining a squad he believes can achieve success.
