Barrow travel to North Yorkshire on Saturday to face a Harrogate Town side that is riding a perfect start to life back in the National League. The fixture is already being described by Barrow’s new boss, Adam Murray, as “the toughest test” of his tenure.
Murray, who was appointed in the summer after guiding Kidderminster Harriers to promotion, has been open about the full rebuild underway at Holker Street. He has noted that Barrow have lost both of their opening fixtures under his stewardship, a stark contrast to Harrogate’s two wins from two.
Harrogate’s Record-Setting Start
Harrogate opened the campaign with a 5-2 demolition of Solihull Moors, with nine players making their debuts in the win. They followed that with another victory, giving them the joint-best defensive record in the division heading into this weekend. The club has retained manager Simon Weaver, who has been in charge at the Exercise Stadium since 2009, making him one of the longest-serving managers in English football.
Murray said: “I think when you look at Harrogate, they’ve been together a long time. They’ve had the same manager for a long, long time. They’ve had the same way of playing for a long, long time. So they’ve got consistency, even though they obviously suffered a relegation last season. They’ve got consistency in a lot of areas, which is the exact opposite to us.”
The Challenge Ahead
Murray admitted that this match ranks among the toughest tests Barrow have faced in the opening three matchdays, noting that they have already played three of the division’s toughest sides. He added: “I think this is probably our toughest test. There again, we’re facing two of the big favourites to bounce back up in the first three games.”
Barrow’s season has been a “rebuilding” effort after a relegation campaign that saw five different managers fail to keep the club in League Two. Murray has been candid about the need to “smash everything to bits and restart the club” if they are to compete.
